Reading Information

At Newburgh Church of England Primary School we prepare our children for learning to read by developing their phonic knowledge and skills right from the start. Research shows that children benefit hugely by exposure to books from an early age and from Nursery, we provide lots of opportunities for children to engage with books that fire their imagination and interest. Both at home and school children should be encouraged to choose and peruse books freely as well as sharing them when read by an adult. Enjoying and sharing books leads to children seeing them as a source of pleasure and interest and motivates them to value reading.

Reading skills are taught through a systematic programme of phonics called ‘Letters (graphemes) and Sounds (phonemes)’ and we aim for all our children to become fluent readers by age seven.
